NEARR Foster-to-Adopt Program
If you are not sure you want to adopt a senior dog or a dog with health or behavioral conditions, NEARR’s Foster-to-Adopt
program lets you foster a dog before deciding whether you want to adopt that dog.
Not all NEARR dogs are eligible dogs for the Foster-to-Adopt program. Eligible dogs include:
Senior dogs, aged 9 or older
Dogs of any age with chronic medical problems such as diabetes,
epilepsy, blindness, dental problems, or conditions requiring high cost
surgical procedures
Dogs of any age with chronic behavioral issues such as separation
anxiety
NOTE: The NEARR Board will decide eligibility due to medical or behavioral conditions.
As with all NEARR adoptions, our goal is to find a home that is in the best interest of the dog. Therefore our traditional
adoption and foster process and policies apply to the Foster-to-Adopt program. You must read and understand NEARR’s
Adoption Policies, Adoption Process
and NEARR’s Foster Policies before completing an adoption
application. By submitting an adoption application you agree to all NEARR’s policies and procedures. To be approved for
the Foster-to-Adopt program, you must complete a phone interview, home visit, and reference check, including a vet reference
if you have other pets, prior to a dog being placed in your home.
In addition, the following policies are specific to the Foster-to-Adopt program:
- When NEARR accepts a dog that is eligible for the Foster-to Adopt program, an approved Foster-to-Adopt applicant
who seems to be a good match will be contacted and given the opportunity to foster the dog.
- If the approved Foster-to-Adopt applicant is interested in adopting, (s)he accepts the dog as a foster dog. Within
two weeks of the dog’s arrival in the foster home, the applicant must decide if (s)he wants to adopt the dog or continue
to foster the dog as a traditional foster.
- If the applicant chooses to adopt the dog, the dog’s Adoption Representative will prepare the adoption agreement and any
other necessary paperwork.
- If the Foster-to-Adopt applicant chooses not to adopt this dog, the dog will remain with the applicant as a traditional
foster dog until NEARR finds the dog an appropriate home. In this case, the Foster-to-Adopt applicant will function as a
traditional foster home. The dog’s information will be added to the Available Dogs page on the NEARR website, and NEARR will
actively seek an adopter.
NOTE: In order to be accepted as a Foster-to-Adopt foster home, you must agree that if you decide not to adopt the dog, you will foster the dog until NEARR finds the dog a new home.
