Abby (First Few Days Update!)

By: colleen @ 11:32 am

Abby’s first nite went fine. When we got home from picking her up she walked into her new home like she had been here before. She walked all around, checking everything out. Took her outside, walked her around the yard (kind of not the same in the dark) then we came in and let her relax, as we played with her. She decided to check out her bed, at the foot of ours, and laid down there for a while. Got up walked around some more, played and then we all went to bed. She looked very comfortable and I believe she had a good first nite.

J. was with her all day Friday, took her out for a couple of walks, thru her ball around for her, she met the cat next door that comes and visits and so far all is well. It’s my day today to spend all day with her (J. will be home, but I told him this is my day!!) Right now she is laying right beside me on the carpet and I think I just heard her snore!!!!!

We are so enjoying her and she fills an empty spot in our home just right. Thank you so much for ABBY!!!!

Sugar Magnolia “Maggie” ~f/k/a Lexis~ (One Week Update!)

By: colleen @ 11:27 am

Wow - I can’t believe it has already been one week. I drove all the way from the North Shore to Lexis’ foster home in Falmouth in the pouring rain, but we were so excited to bring her home that I didn’t care. All of the animals in our home are named after Grateful Dead songs - so Lexis became “Sugar Magnolia” and we call her Maggie. Maggie is a wonderful dog. She and our lab mix Aiko have had lots of fun playing with sticks in the back yard and exploring the woods behind our home (Maggie is not too good with the concept of “trails” so her lead gets tangled in the brambles a lot). Maggie has even jumped in the pond and gone for a swim. Maggie met her first trail buddy on Sunday morning, a five-month old Alaskan Malamute named Princess. Maggie was very well behaved, even when Princess tried to jump on her head.

Maggie loves to catch sticks and balls. Sometimes she takes a ball over to the cat, Terrapin, and then tosses it in front of her. I think she is trying to get the Terrapin to play catch. Maggie also loves to chew on toys. The viscosity of her slobber is truly spectacular! After all of the play time is over, Maggie generally plants herself in the living rooom on the dog bed or better yet, on the couch. Last night Maggie had half of the couch and Aiko had the other half so I was stuck watching TV sitting on the floor. But I happily sat in front of the couch with one hand on each of my girls. What a good night!

Mort (2 Week Update)

By: colleen @ 9:11 am

Mort is becoming more a part of our family every day. He’s been to one varsity soccer game and a cross-country meet. All he wanted to do was chase balls and people, but his harness held fast. He’s getting much better at walking withhis harness, but still likes to lunge at other dogs and kids. He just wants to play, but doesn’t know his own strength.

He had a great check-up at the vet today. He was a very cooperative patient, and was rewarded with cookies. He didn’t need any shots, so I suspect that was a plus.

Mort and Heidi the dachshund have become fast friends. They sleep curled up in front of the wood stove together, and chase each other around the house for fun. He’s very playful yet gentle with Heidi, and she lets him know when it’s time to call it quits.

Mort LOVES his walks, and looks forward to them each day. We walk everywhere, and go for long hikes in the woods. He has great stamina, and could go on forever like the Energizer Bunny. He’s learning how to heel and to take a break.

Mort continues to be strong and healthy, and is a loving addition to our family. We take him everywhere, and he’s becoming more socialized and adventurous. Thanks again for choosing us as his forever home.

Mort (One Week Update!)

By: colleen @ 8:51 am

Mort is doing great! In fact, he’s sitting right next to me as I write this note. He is learning our routines, but most importantly, he’s getting to know each of us and having a great time. He is such a great dog, with a loveable personality. It’s been 6 days since we adopted Mort. He’s a wonderful dog with lots of love to give. He has been busy getting to know us and our other pets, and is learning our daily routine. He has really calmed down over the past few days, and is settling in.

Since he became a part of our family, he has walked about 12 miles with us on his new harness. He’s learning to walk on a leash, and looks forward to his walks every day. The minute he sees the leash, he knows it ’s time to put on the harness and go out for some fun. His favorite place to walk is our local lake, where he romps in the water, lays down in it, and actually swims attached to his leash. He really loves that part.

Mort has really taken to our boys, who play with him constantly. He LOVES to fetch, and has already chewed through most of his toys. He plays hard. We purchased some new ones today. We let him choose where he wanted to sleep, and he mostly sleeps with our youngest son. Last night he slept with us…..I think he’s trying us out.

Mort has a vet appointment scheduled for next week, and we are looking into obedience classes. He already knows some basic commands, thanks to his foster parents and previous owners, and we’re working on some new ones.

Thanks so much for choosing us as Mort’s new family! We are so happy, and we think Mort is too. We’re looking forward to many new adventures with Mort!

She’s become very comfortable and content with me. Looking forward to the holidays with Lucy. She has another best friend that she visits often. Its a English Bulldog and her name is Lucy too. Maggie (2 Year Update)

By: colleen @ 8:32 am

This is Maggie’s two year update. Maggie is happy and healthy. She is such a pleasure. She celebrated her 12th birthday a few weeks ago and seems none the worse for wear. She’s gotten a little picky (spoiled?) with her food. She started to pick at her kibble, so I added a little shreded cheese on it. Well now she won’t eat the kibble without it.

Maggie loves to ride in the car and visit my family and friends. That is her opportunity for a lot of extra petting and treats. Her favorite treat is still peanut butter, followed closely by carrots. She has not enjoyed the weather the last week or so, because she does not like to get her feet wet! It has been wonderful having her with me. I really can’t remember what I did before she and Sam joined my life.

Ringo (One Year Update)

By: colleen @ 8:56 pm

The saying “Time flies when you’re having fun” has never been more true for S. & I since we’ve adopted Ringo 53 weeks ago.

Last year we adopted a skinny little adolescent who has grown into a self-confident adult. Regal in stature literally as he’s grown in height and length about 1 1/2 inches and has gained a few pounds weighing in last week at his annual vet visit at 72 pounds, which the vet says is perfect. He’s health and happy and so are we!

Always ready for action our little king has hiked the White Mountains, waded in the Atlantic, kept the squirrels out of the yard, guarded the vegetable garden, made friends with the postman and help spread the word about NEARR with every person he meets and by helping us to do home visits.

Life’s great. Enjoy the pictures.

Trout ~f/k/a Deacon~ Update

By: colleen @ 5:03 pm

trout
I just wanted to write you a quick note to let you know that Trout is doing very well. He’s happy and healthy. We went on vacation last week to NH and ME. He got to swim, hike, and backpack (he ever wore his own backpack). He’s just fabulous. There isn’t anything major going on in his life. But, I just wanted you to know that he is doing well and that you all do a great job with this rescue league.

Hudson ~f/k/a Capo~ Graduates!

By: colleen @ 5:00 pm

I just wanted to send an e-mail about Hudson’s good news. This past Wednesday he graduated from obedience school with flying colors! He passed his final exam with no problems. He has also been doing better with other dogs, we have been working on positive reinforcement and praise when he sees other dogs. It has worked on walks, but he still barks up a storm if he is in the car. His new fascination is with squirrels and cats. We had new neighbors move in with two cats and Hud always let’s us know when they are outside. And if a squirrel evens thinks about stepping foot in our yard Hud is there to put an end to that. He continues to make us laugh daily!
