Lucky - One week update
A two part update:
After a couple of days in his new home…
Lucky has had a great transition! He was only a little nervous in the car ( The Prius is tight for him) and pulled quite a bit on his very first walk. But he flopped on his bed that first night and slept fine. He has been around Fresh Pond both days. J. ran with him in the snow on the golf course ( you were right, he loves snow!) and he even likes to sleep late giving me time for not just one but two cups of coffee. He is very alert and able to deal with all the people coming in and out to visit him. I bought the harness which helps with his pulling– that and his barking at other dogs are the only things that seem to be issues. He comes when we call and looks so attentive. He is already able to run right beside me on the leash and seems willing to cope with a moving bed ( we are trying to figure out the best spot.) He sits with us when we eat but no begging. He loves his treats and we have all learned to give commands with authority. He even responds to my friend’s swedish commands!
And a week later…
I took Lucky with me on a yoga retreat at our place in upstate New York this weekend. He was perfectly behaved. He lay on the floor of the van for 5 hours for the trip. He ran with delight on the farm, chasing the horses and wagging the whole time. When we did yoga, he lay on his blanket and waited patiently, even delighting us with his downward dog stretch as he got up from the nap. I went cross country skiing with him on the lake and he chased ski mobiles and made friends with the ice fishers who complimented e on having such a happy dog. He greats life as an adventure–every walk, every stop at even a gas station is an opportunity for celebration.
He is better on the harness. I need to teach him to come for a whistle when he is on the leash. Once L. gets back this week we will look into obedience training classes.
He feels like our dog, as though he has always been ours. When J. saw him after having not been with him for two days, ( not me) he said, “Lucky I missed you so.”) We feel so Lucky. He seems like he belongs.
