Bear - 1 Week Update

By: volunteer @ 7:46 pm

Bear, the almost three year old chocolate Lab, arrived at his Forever Home one week ago. Bear lost his first dad in a tragic accident in January and had a difficult time until he recently spent two weeks in a very loving NEARR foster home and attached himself to his foster mom to the point where he followed her into the shower.

Now, upon arriving at his new home, he has attached himself to me, Big Boss, like Super Glue covered Velcro. He won’t let me out of his sight except when his new mom is around. He suffers from separation anxiety and at first, would not eat or even take treats. In a short week, he has come around to where he is eating regularly and starting to feel comfortable in his new environment.

He enjoys riding in Big Boss’s pickup truck and going to hiking trails by the brook, always secured on a long retractable, cloth leash. He has a reputation as an escape artist. He does have issues meeting other dogs but we are working through that by walking down back roads with other dog owners and their dogs that are on opposite sides of the road. We will continue that practice and introduce him slowly. He had issues with one resident dog here that was a friend of the family and it happened the very first day he arrived when he was full of anxiety and confusion. Bear did not have issues with other dogs at his foster, as they had three dogs. Perhaps he is still confused about where he belongs and whom he can and can’t trust, but, as I mentioned, we are working through that.

He will attend a beginner’s obedience class starting very soon and we will address that issue there. We will schedule a vet appointment as soon as we get his records from NEARR. He is great with people and also our four-year-old granddaughter, although we are on guard to not allow a situation to develop if we can help it. Bear is like a giant teddy bear, wanting to please and just loving any and all attention that he can muster up. Once he settles in he will be a fantastic friend and family member.

We’re very happy to have had the opportunity to adopt Bear after losing our beloved NEARR dog, Duke Skywalker, a month and a half ago to cancer. Duke arrived eight years ago on Memorial Day and Bear arrived on Memorial Day this year. We know that Duke would approve of and want us to give Bear the same kind of home that he shared with us and the fact that they came to us on the exact same date, eight years apart, is not, in our opinion, just a coincidence.

Many thanks from Bear, his new mom and Big Boss, for all the wonderful work that all of the NEARR volunteers do to help dogs such as Bear find new Forever Homes. You folks are the best!

Koal - 4 Year Update

By: volunteer @ 7:29 pm

Koal and I are doing fine. Koal is getting used to the heat from Florida, but I don’t let him out for long at a time. The attachments are his continuing desire to go after a ball, frizbie, soccer ball, football or just about anything that he can run after and bring back. I can’t believe it either that it’s been 4 years, but at the same time, it seems like he’s been with me for ever. He’s slowing down alot, but so am I. I guess we have to accept that we are getting old, we just refuse to act like it. Take care.

Riley - 1 year Update

By: volunteer @ 8:08 pm

It’s amazing that it’s been a whole year since we adopted Riley! He’s simply fantastic. He has become very accostomed to responding to my off-leash voice commands and we take him on walking trails all the time. We took him up to New Hampshire and Maine earlier this month for vacation - some photos are attached. He has been a great companion to my wife and my elderly father. He’s been in great health too!

Bruno - 1 Year Update

By: volunteer @ 8:08 pm

Bruno’s one year update. Bruno is very happy and healthy these days. He’s about 7 years old now, still loves playing ball and swimming. We go for many walks along with his new partner, a minpin. They get along very well and entertain each other. He loves the couch, treats, and going for rides. His health is good. He hates baths, going to the vet, and getting his nails trimmed. We love him very much. Thanks NEARR.

Dexter - 6 Month Update

By: volunteer @ 8:04 pm

Dexter is just a regular member of the household now. He really enjoys playing fetch outside, going for rides, and just hanging around with us. There is a park in the next town over where dogs can go off leash. We have gone there three times, and he just loves it there. He just runs and runs and runs. There is a small beach area where the dogs can go swimming. The first time we went there, Dexter would just put his feet in the water and get a drink. I was wondering if he knew that he was a lab! The second time we went someone had a bunch of tennis balls that they were throwing into the water, and there was no question that Dexter knows how to swim! He and two other dogs played fetch for quite a while. We went back today, and he had a great time playing with a couple of other dogs. Looks like we will try to go there once a week!

We finished the obedience classes last week. Dexter did really well. He is excellent with spoken and visual cues for “sit”, “down”, and “stay.” One interesting activity was practicing come when called. Dexter was doing wonderful, and then the instructor decided to put out some distractions (ie, toys and balls). I said that Dexter would never get past the balls and come to me; the instructor said that I needed to have faith. Well, Dexter proved me wrong…he did go up to one of the balls, but he never picked it up; he did come to me. I was very proud of him…because that had to have taken lots of will power to do! At the end of the twelve lessons, the instructor gets out a box of toys from which the dogs can choose a graduation gift. Bet that you wouldn’t be surprised what Dexter picked out…a squeaky Kong tennis ball! Not only did Dexter get a lot out of the classes, we as a family did. The instructor was full of hints that have helped us out around the house.

A huge thank you to all of you at NEARR for all that you do! We are so glad that Dexter has joined us.
