I would like more information about volunteering for NEARR in the following areas (See our volunteer page for more information):
Fostering a retriever: This entails bringing a NEARR dog into your home for an average of 3 – 8 weeks while NEARR finds him/her a home. Fostering a retriever requires: having some experience with dogs (specifically retrievers and/or rescued dogs) AND being able to keep a dog in your home until he/she is placed. If you have other animals in residence, they must be compatible with dogs. You will need to review and agree to NEARR's fostering policies before a dog is placed in your home.

Phonescreening applications: This is the first step toward adopters adopting a dog from NEARR. The phonescreen will help determine if the applicant would be a good home for a NEARR dog and if so, what type of NEARR dog. Phonescreeners must have some experience with retrievers (rescued retrievers a plus!), good people skills and preferably internet access.
Time required: about 60 minutes per application (including taking notes).
Home visitors: Interviewing prospective adopters in their homes to determine if they are a good fit and have a compatible environment for a NEARR dog. Home visitors must feel comfortable visiting with strangers in their homes and must complete a standard written report. Preferable that you have a dog to bring along.
Time required: 1 – 2 hours per visit.
Transport: Transporting retrievers from shelters, sometimes from their owners and transporting them to (sometimes partway, depending on distance) their foster home. At times, we need help transporting dogs to/from vet clinics. Transporters must have a vehicle and be able to handle unfamiliar dogs.
Time: Usually 60 – 90 minutes, depending on how far you are willing to travel.
Evaluating Retrievers: Evaluate retrievers in shelters or in their homes to determine suitability and temperament. This position requires knowledge of retrievers, some behavioral knowledge, ability to determine if dog is healthy (by looking) and the ability to follow your head and not your heart.
Time: Usually 60 minutes per evaluation.
Website design, graphic design, desktop publishing, etc. We are always in need of folks to help us create flyers and other marketing materials and to help out with our website. Access to computers required, technical knowledge a plus.
Time: Varies.
Adoption Days and Other Events: Help at our monthly adoption days or dog walks handling retrievers, selling goods and educating the public about NEARR and rescued retrievers.
Time: About 4 hours each event.
